Diplomats Earn Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall made up for a 3-1 loss to Richard Stockton earlier in the day to take a 3-2 victory over Susquehanna and earn a split on the last day of the F&M Scramble Tournament at the Mayser Center.  The result of Sunday's contests brings the Diplomats record to 5-7 on the season.

In the first match of the afternoon, F&M found itself in an early 2-0 hole against the Ospreys (25-22, 25-20).  In the third set, the Diplomats hit their stride, winning 25-20.  The two teams traded the lead through the third set until a return error by Stockton slammed into the net, giving F&M the 19-18 lead.  From there, a 6-2 run closed out the set to make the match 2-1.

In the fourth, Richard Stockton came out strong, putting the Diplomats in an 8-1 hole.  Down by a score of 10-3, F&M erased its deficit with a 6-1 run to bring the score to 11-9.  The two-point margin was as close as the Diplomats came to tying the set as Richard Stockton eventually pulled away with a 25-21 win.

Kerry Rom led F&M offensively with 16 kills, while Rosalie Frank added 13.  Frank's impressive day continued with 27 assists and nine digs.  Alyssa Sanchez chipped in on defense with 18 digs.

F&M started off slow in its second game of the afternoon, dropping the first set to Susquehanna 25-16.  The Diplomats came storming back in the second set to tie the match up 1-1 with a 25-23 win.  With the set tied 20-20 in the third, a serving error by the Crusaders gave F&M the lead, 21-20.  Caroline Hubbard followed with back-to-back aces to put the Diplomats up 23-20. Candice Tussing closed out the set by chipping a return over the net to seal the 25-23 victory and even the match 1-1.

F&M looked in control after taking the third set 25-20, but Susquehanna was able to even the match 2-2 with a 25-23 set win.  The Diplomats found themselves down 10-6, midway through the set.  Followed by an F&M timeout, the Diplomats went on a 9-0 run to close out the set 15-10.

F&M registered 13 aces during the match, including five from Caroline Hubbard. Candice Tussing and Rosalie Frank paced the offense with 12 kills apiece.  On defense, Alyssa Sanchez tallied 19 digs, while Kerry Rom added 15. Rom was rewarded with a sport on the All-Tournament team for her play over the weekend.

The Diplomats take to the road this Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. match at McDaniel to open up Centennial Conference play.
