Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team battled Ursinus to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) action at Tylus Field. The result brings F&M's record to 1-2-3 (1-1-1 CC) on the season, while Ursinus moves to 2-5-1 (0-2-1 CC).
The Diplomats found the net early with a Carley Nicholson goal at the 14-minute mark in the first half to go ahead 1-0. Nancy Epstein controlled the ball in front of the Ursinus net before finding Nicholson for the assist. The goal was Nicholson's third on the season. She has found the back of the net in three of the team's last four games.
The senior forward's goal kept F&M in the lead until the 37th minute, when the Bears tied up the game 1-1 on a Natalie Massari header off of a Leah Shaw corner kick.
The score remained tied at the end of the regulation, with each defense limiting their opponent's opportunities. In the first overtime, the Diplomats had a golden scoring chance with just seconds left on the clock. Jen Korngut sent a perfectly placed corner kick to Brianna Reid. The sophomore defender narrowly missed the net, sending the shot to the right of the goalkeeper and ending play in the first overtime.
With 6:16 left in the second overtime, F&M once again came close to handing the Bears a loss. Kelley Lang controlled possession in front of the Ursinus net and fired away a shot to goalkeeper Kara DiJoseph. The Ursinus net minder barely got a hand on the ball, smacking it out of bounds.
Opportunities were limited for both squads after the shot from Lang as the horn sounded at the end of the second overtime with 1-1 still showing on the scoreboard.
The Diplomats outshot Ursinus 14-10 on the day. Goalkeeper Amanda McGowan faced seven shots on goal, making six saves.
F&M returns to the field this Thursday with a road match against Widener. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
