F&M Tops Albright in Double OT

Box Score

READING, Pa. -- Career highs from Matt Porter and Terrel Phelps led Franklin & Marshall to a 95-92 double overtime victory over Albright in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening. The win is the third straight for F&M as the Diplomats go into the break with a 5-4 record while the Lions dropped to 3-5.

Phelps finished with a career-best 25 points, none bigger than his three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation that sent that game into the first overtime. Albright jumped out to a five-point edge in overtime before Jon Salandra and Matt Porter netted back-to-back layups to make it a one-point game, 80-79, at 2:43. The Lions answered and went up six when Porter hit a triple with 54 seconds left and Phelps hit two from the stripe to bring F&M back within a point.

The Lions came up empty on their next trip down the court and Phelps was fouled on the ensuing possession, sending him to the line with two shots. The junior hit his first shot to tie the game at 85, but came up empty on his second, sending the game into double overtime.

Albright again took control in the early minutes of overtime, jumping out to a 92-87 lead under a minute into the final stanza. The Diplomats answered with five straight and took a 93-92 lead on a layup by Morgan Lee with 1:45 left to play. The Lions could not connect on their next trip down the court and the Diplomats missed two shots on their possession, but came away with the rebounds on both occasions, before calling timeout with 21 ticks on the clock. Porter hit a jumper after the timeout with 12 seconds left to put F&M up 95-92 and Pedro Perez's shot did not connect on the Lions final shot.

F&M jumped out to a 20-10 lead six minutes into the contest and maintained an eight-point advantage, 26-18, at 9:15. Albright countered with an 11-4 run to come within one, 30-29, at 5:28 and eventually tied the game at 32 two minutes later. The teams traded points down the final stretch of the first with F&M holding onto at 41-39 lead at the break.

The Diplomats led 44-43 two minutes into the second before going on an 8-2 run to go up 52-45 at 16:22. F&M found itself in foul trouble early in the second and Albright made the best of the opportunity, going on a 17-5 over the next eight minutes and took a 62-57 lead with 8:37 left in the second. The Lions increased their lead to seven, 66-59, at 6:42 before the Diplomats outscored Albright 13-6 over the next six minutes to tie the game at 72 with just under a minute left in regulation.

Albright went up three over their next two possessions with 15 seconds remaining, before Phelps hit the three-pointer to send the game into the first overtime.

Phelps netted 17 of his points in the second half, hitting 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Porter had a career and team high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor. Salandra shot 9-for-16 from the field to finish with 20 while Cedric Moune ended with nine points and 10 boards and Lee grabbed seven rebounds to go along with his eight points.

Perez led all scorers with 28 for the Lions and Sameen Swint netted 19. Kyle Jordan and Sam Marrella also finished in double-figures for Albright with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The contest wrapped up the 2013 portion of F&M's schedule and the Diplomats will return to action on Jan. 2 when F&M hosts MCLA in the Sponaugle New Years Tournament.
