Diplomats Rally Past Bears

LANCASTER, PA – Franklin & Marshall closed out the last six minutes of the game on a 7-2 run en route to the 46-43 victory against Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Tuesday evening. The win propelled the Diplomats to 2-4, 1-2 CC, while the Bears fell to 3-3, 2-2 CC.

The Diplomats were down three, 42-39, with 5:47 left in the game, before a Sarah Haddon free throw made it 42-40 with 5:26 remaining in the contest. Haddon followed with a left baseline jumper to tie the game, 42-42, with 4:37 to go. Two free throws by Sam Plunkett put F&M ahead, 44-42, with 3:26 remaining in the game, and Haddon added a layup at 2:48 for the Diplomats' seventh-straight point to make the score 46-42, and put the game out of reach.

In the first half, Ursinus jumped out to an 18-7 lead with 8:11 remaining. F&M countered and closed out the opening half on a 12-3 run as the Diplomats were within two points, 21-19 at halftime. Kristina McCarthy led the Diplomats in the first half with six points and five rebounds.

F&M took its first lead of the game with 18:39 to go in the second half off a Hannah Rose Nussbaum jumper. The next seven minutes featured five lead changes until Ursinus' Alyssa Polimeni tied the game at 30 with 11:31 remaining. F&M followed with a 5-0 spurt over the next minute of play to go up 35-30 with 10:26 left in the game.

The Bears responded with a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to take the 40-39 lead with 6:52 remaining in the contest, but the Diplomats put together the 7-2 run in the closing minutes to earn the victory.

McCarthy finished with 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the Diplomats, while Haddon tallied nine points and recorded five rebounds. Nussbaum and Jessica Dowicz added seven points for F&M. Polimeni paced the Bears with nine points, while Jessica Porada and Olivia Kane each added six.

The game featured eight total lead changes with seven coming in the second half. F&M held Ursinus to 25.9 percent from the field, while the Diplomats shot 34.7 percent from the floor.

F&M returns to CC action on Thursday when the Diplomats travel to Haverford. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
