Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. -- Hayk Gyokchyan scored a game-high 28 points to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 68-46 victory over Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) action Saturday afternoon. The win is the third straight over the Mules and the Diplomats improved to 16-5, 11-3 CC this season.
The game started out slow with Muhlenberg (12-9, 8-6 CC) holding onto a slim 7-6 lead almost five minutes into the game. F&M came alive seconds later and outscored the Mules 14-2 over the next six minutes to go up 20-9 at 9:30. Muhlenberg answered with 11 unanswered to tie the game at 20 before Gyokchyan hit a trey to start a 10-2 F&M run down the final four minutes of the half that gave the Diplomats a 30-22 halftime edge.
F&M tallied the first five points of the second and took a double-digit lead, 35-22, at 17:42. The teams exchanged points over the next few minutes and Muhlenberg came within 10, 45-35 at 9:44.
That was as close as they would get as F&M went on a 14-4 scoring spurt spanning six minutes and was capped off by another Gyokchyan trey that extended F&M's lead to 59-39 at 3:33.
Muhlenberg came within 17 points, but the Diplomats quickly went back up 20 and held on for the win.
Gyokchyan shot 6-for-9 from behind the arc and went 4-for-4 from the line to go along with eight rebounds. The senior forward moved into the 10th spot on the all-time rebound list with 663 career boards.
Matt Porter hit 7-of-9 foul shots and finished with 13 points and Jon Salandra had eight boards and six points. Max Brewer had a good all around line with six rebounds, five points, five assists and five steals.
Malique Killing led Muhlenberg with 18 points on 7-for-18 shooting and Kevin Hargrove finished with 10.
F&M outshot the Mules 41.5% to 29.2% and forced 20 turnovers that resulted in 20 points.
Glenn Robinson picked up career win 849 to bring his career total to 849-310.
F&M goes on the road next week with contests against Gettysburg and Swarthmore. The Diplomats face the Bullets on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. and take on the Garnet on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
