LANCASTER, Pa. – Maggie Mae Shields tallied four goals to lead No. 13 Franklin & Marshall to a 13-6 victory over No. 9 York in the Diplomats season opener Tuesday afternoon at Tylus Field. 

F&M (1-0) scored in pairs in the first half and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead six minutes into the contest. Kara Stanley found Mary Mitchell for the first score and Caroline Krohn struck for the second goal four minutes later at 24:05.  

York (1-1) answered with two of their own and tied the game at 2-2, before the Diplomats put another pair on the board to go up for good, 4-2, at 14:14. Krohn's free-position tally made it 3-2 and Kimberly Abruzzo connected with Mitchell for the second score. 

Sarah Castle put the Spartans within a goal, 4-3, but F&M struck with two more when Shields and Ali Kelly scored almost four minutes apart to send the game into the break with the Diplomats leading 6-3. 

Shields picked up her third score almost six minutes into the half before Mitchell found Emily Everdell at 21:15 to put F&M ahead 8-3. The Spartans made it 8-4, but F&M rallied off five unanswered over a 14-minute span to blow the game wide open and lead 13-4 with 6:17 left to play. 

Ali Kelly started of the run with a free positions score and found Shields for the next score in the run. Shields netted back-to-back scores while Mitchell and Kelly finished off the spurt with free position goals. 

Caroline Doran had a game-high four groundballs and Christie Bonfiglio finished with two.

Kelsey Hoffman turned away six shots and improved to 1-0 in the net while Kelsey Evans took the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season. 

F&M returns to action on the Saturday when the Diplomats travel to Washington & Lee for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
