No. 5 Cornell Survives No. 7 Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. - No. 7 Franklin & Marshall dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to No. 5 Cornell in men's squash action Saturday night at the Mayser Center. The loss ends the Diplomats (15-4) 11-match winning streak, while the Big Red (15-3) have now won three straight.

The Big Red came into Saturday's matchup riding high on momentum as they were fresh off a 5-4 upset of top-ranked, previously unbeaten, and defending national champion Princeton last night. F&M gave Cornell all it could handle, leading for much of the match and at one point taking a 4-3 advantage, but the Big Red came up with big points in the final matches to come out on top.

The match was hotly contested with five matches stretching to five games, including the decisive showdown at the No. 4 position between F&M's Pedro Veiga de Almeida and Cornell's Michael Sunderland. With the match tied at 4-4, de Almeida and Sunderland went back-and-forth, splitting the first four games to send it to a winner-take-all fifth. In the final frame, de Almeida had a pair of match points, but Sunderland wouldn't go away easily as he clawed his way back and eventually came out on top in dramatic fashion, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 13-11.

Jack Cutler provided a key win for F&M at No. 7 with a lengthy five-game victory against Bryan Keating. After dropping the first two games, Cutler battled back with a vengeance, taking the final three frames and the match, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-9, giving F&M a 4-3 edge with two matches remaining.

The Diplomats dominated the bottom half of the lineup, securing wins at the No. 5, No. 6, No. 7, and No. 9 positions. No. 9 Brian Henry made quick work of Matthew Shang (11-3, 11-6, 11-6), while No. 5 Antonio De La Torre downed Owen Butler in four (11-13, 12-10, 11-9, 11-7). No. 6 Alex Arjoon also earned a point for F&M, defeating Ryan Todd in five (11-4, 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 11-5).

F&M is back in action tomorrow at Navy at 3:00 p.m.
