Red Dragons Down Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 9 Franklin & Marshall fell 15-9 to No. 3 Cortland State in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats dropped to 2-1 while the Red Dragons remained undefeated at 3-0. 

Cortland came out strong with three goals in the first 5:15 of action before F&M answered with two of its own. Ali Kelly found the back of the net at 21:52 and Caroline Krohn struck unassisted at 20:26 to put F&M within a goal. 

The Red Dragons went up 4-2 on a free position goal by Maria Di Fato before Kimberly Abruzzo found Anastasia Mergner a minute later to make it 4-3 in Cortland's favor at 17:37. The Red Dragons went on to net four unanswered goals over 10 minutes to take a commanding 8-3 lead.  Mary Mitchell hooked up with Maggie Mae Shields to stop the run, but Cortland tallied two more to end the half and went into the break with 10-4 advantage. 

Ali Kelly got things started for the Diplomats with a goal 1:13 into the second, but Cortland responded with a pair of goals for a 12-5 lead at 23:58. Shields struck two minutes later and the Red Dragons rallied off three straight to go up 15-6 with 9:44 left to play. F&M countered and finished the game strong with three unanswered goals. Mitchell and Brittney Jorgenson teamed up for a score at 7:28, Krohn picked up her second score 24 seconds later and Jorgenson netted the final score of the game at 1:14. 

Krohn came away with seven draws while Jen Noon, Megan Kelly and Ali Kelly both finished with three groundballs. 

Kelsey Hoffman took the loss with six saves and dropped to 2-1 and Shauna Hutchinson picked up the win with 10 saves. 

The Diplomats had a slight advantage in shots, 26-25, picked up 21 groundballs to Cortland's 16 and came away with 16 of the game's 26 draws. F&M was 12-for-16 on clears and scored on all three on its extra-man opportunities. 

F&M travels to Florida this week where the Diplomats will face Ithaca on Thursday in Orlando.
