F&M Concludes Scramble at 2-1

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team took two out of three matches at the 2013 F&M Scramble Tournament to improve to 10-1 on the year. The Diplomats swept Mt. St. Vincent (0-6) by a score of 3-0, fell to Cabrini (8-3) at 3-1 before finishing off the day with a 3-1 win against Susquehanna (12-2).

Against Mt. St. Vincent, F&M dominated play from the start, opening up the first set by taking 16 of the first 19 points that included a 9-0 run. The Diplomats cruised the rest of the way for the 25-14 victory in the opening frame.

Up by a score of 14-10 in the second, an 8-0 run put F&M up 22-10 and was capped off by a Katie Foreman kill. The Dolphins were unable to make up the deficit as the Diplomats took the second at 25-12.

Ahead 2-0 in the match, F&M clung to an 11-10 advantage before rattling off four-straight points to go ahead 15-10. F&M maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, finishing off Mt. St. Vincent with an Emily Gerard kill to take a 25-17 victory and finish off the sweep.

Gerard led the way with 10 kills followed by nine from Julie Harvey. Meghan Hubert tallied 12 assists, while Caroline Hubbard also reached double digits with 10. The Diplomats combined for 14 service aces on the match, including four from Alyssa Sanchez.

F&M trailed early against Cabrini, dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-23 respectively. In the third, the Diplomats fought back by taking the final five points of the frame to edge out a 26-24 win.

Trailing 2-1 in the match, F&M fell behind 11-5 early in the fourth and was unable to recover as the Cavaliers took the set by a score of 25-16 to seal the win.

Gerard paced the offense with 15 kills, followed by 13 from Harvey and 10 from Foreman. Hubbard was solid with 37 assists, while Sanchez registered 21 digs for the defense. Ellie Ezekiel also reached double-digit digs with 15 as Mary Leneweaver chipped in 14.

In their final match of the day, the Diplomats took an early lead against Susquehanna with a 25-21 win in the opening set. The Crusaders battled back to even the match at one by taking the second frame with a score of 25-22.

F&M trailed 13-7 in the third before a 6-1 run pulled the Diplomats within one at 14-13. Susquehanna maintained the lead by a narrow margin until F&M evened the score at 22-22 with an Ezekiel kill.

From there, the Diplomats captured the next three points and capped off the win with an ace from Parys Zambas.

In the fourth, the score was close once again with a 20-20 tie late in the frame. Two-straight kills from F&M put the Diplomats out in front at 22-20 before the Crusaders pulled within one on the next point. However, F&M managed to take the final three points of the frame en route to the 25-21 win.

Harvey led the way with 12 kills, followed by Ezekiel with 11 and Gerard with 10. Hubbard tallied 42 assists and chipped in six digs. Three Diplomats reached double-digit digs, led by Sanchez with 16, Leneweaver with 12 and Ezekiel with 11.

For their efforts on the day, Hubbard and Harvey were named to the All-Tournament Team.

F&M takes to the road on Saturday when the Diplomats kick of Centennial Conference (CC) play with a match against Ursinus at 1:00 p.m.
