Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – A Spencer Plante tally just three minutes into the contest was more than enough for goalkeeper Amanda McGowan to notch her record-breaking 17th career shutout, as the Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team hung on for a 1-0 victory over Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) action.
The Diplomats improved to 4-1-2, 2-0-1 CC with the win, while the Owls fell to 1-8, 0-3 CC.
McGowan recorded five saves on the game for her fourth shutout of the year, passing Erin Roy '08 for first on F&M's all-time list.
The offense came out firing for the Diplomats when a shot by Stephanie Bartner in the third minute forced the Bryn Mawr goalkeeper to make an early stop.
Just seconds later, Plante netted her second goal of the season when the junior forward lofted a shot over the Owls' Valentina Viertel to put F&M out in front at 1-0.
Scoring chances were limited for the Diplomats throughout the remainder of the first as F&M managed only one other shot on goal in the frame. However, the defense did their part, limiting Bryn Mawr to a pair of shots on goal.
In the second, McGowan (4-1-2) stopped two opportunities from the Owls in the 68th and 69th minutes to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Diplomats were unable to add to their advantage in the closing period but strong defense and solid goalkeeping helped F&M hold on for the win.
The Diplomats outshot Bryn Mawr 9-6, while dominating on corners at 6-0. Alexa Yarish, Plante and Bartner all finished with two shots.
F&M returns home on Tuesday to face off against Widener at 7:00 p.m. in non-conference play.
