Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa -- Four players scored in double-figures to help deliver Franklin & Marshall a 72-65 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. F&M improved to 13-6, 9-3 CC while the Garnet fell to 5-14, 2-10 CC.
Swarthmore took control early and dominated most of the first half and led 14-6 almost five minutes into the game. The Garnet increased their lead to 10, 18-8, on a layup by Chris Bourne a little over three minutes later. F&M answered with a 12-1 run over the next three minutes to take a 22-21 lead as Jared Wright tallied five points in the run for the Diplomats.
The teams traded points over the next few minutes of action before Swarthmore outscored F&M 6-2 over the final 3:30 of the first and went into the break with a 36-31 advantage.
The Garnet increased their lead to seven, 40-33, to start out the second, but the Diplomats countered by outscoring Swathing 8-4 to make it a two-point, 43-41, game with 15:31 left. The teams again traded baskets with Swarthmore holding onto a 51-48 edge before Devin Figueroa hit a triple to start an 11-3 run capped off by a bucket from Cedric Moune to make it 59-54 at 8:27.
Swarthmore challenged down the stretch, coming within three points, but the Diplomats maintained the lead the remainder of the game.
Matt Porter hit 6-of-11 from the floor to lead the Diplomats with 14 points, while Jon Salandra and Moune both finished with 13 points and seven boards. Salandra added seven assists and Moune picked up four blocks and two steals. Figueroa shot 2-for-3 from behind the arc to finish with 11 and Wright tallied eight for F&M.
Jay Kober paced the Garnet with 14 points with Joe Keedy and Seth Liebert finishing with 13 and 12 points respectively. Karl Barkley netted 11 and Bourne ended the day with 10.
F&M outshot Swarthmore 53-49 percent and converted 12 turnovers into 18 points.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M travels to Johns Hopkins for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
