Diplomats Fall to Bullets

LANCASTER, Pa. – Gettysburg used a late second half run to defeat Franklin & Marshall 64-55 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening. The loss dropped the Diplomats' record to 3-21, 1-16 CC, while the Bullets improved to 15-8, 10-7 CC.

Trailing 52-49 with five minutes remaining in the contest, F&M's Kristina McCarthy connected on a layup to bring the Diplomats within one at 52-51 with 4:09 to go. However, Gettysburg finished the game strong with a 12-4 run and earned the 64-55 victory.

Both defenses were strong early as the game was tied 4-4 with 15:54 to go in the first. The Bullets followed with a 12-5 run that spanned over six minutes of action to take a 16-9 lead with 9:23 remaining. F&M fought back and scored seven consecutive points to tie the game at 16-16 with 6:11 left.

For the remainder of the half, the teams traded buckets but two free throws from Gettysburg with three seconds to go gave the Bullets a 27-25 advantage heading into intermission.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Gettysburg extended its lead when Katie Earley sank a trey to put the Bullets up 38-29 with 16:42 to go. From there, the Diplomats kept the game within reach and were down by seven points at 45-38 with 11:53 to go until Earley knocked down another three-pointer to give Gettysburg a 48-38 lead with 11:04 left.

Next, F&M responded with a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 52-51, but Gettysburg's late run was too much for the Diplomats as the Bullets came away with the 64-55 win.

McCarthy paced F&M, going for 15 points and 14 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Sarah Haddon notched her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Sam Plunkett chipped in eight points.

Gettysburg's Caroline Murphy scored a game-high 24 points, while Alyssa Isler recorded 11 and Samantha Pagel pitched in 10.

The Bullets outshot the Diplomats 38.3 to 37.1 percent, while F&M outrebounded Gettysburg 44-26.

F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to Carlisle to battle Dickinson in the final regular season contest. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
