PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 18 Franklin & Marshall women's squash team saw its run in the Walker Cup (C Division) of the Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships come to an end in the title match, falling to No. 17 Amherst by a narrow 6-3 score on Sunday afternoon.
The loss moved the Diplomats' record to 9-13 on the season in their final team match of the year, while Amherst improved to 11-9.
Emily Caldwell opened the championship contest with a dominating 11-6, 12-10, 11-5 decision from the No. 1 position, while Roxanna Mead put forth a gutsy effort at No. 3 to come away with a hard-fought 3-2 win. Mead fell behind 1-0 after a marathon 13-11 loss in the opening game but fought back to tie the bout with an 11-6 win in the second.
Mead once again found herself trailing after dropping the third by another 13-11 score but managed to capture the final two frames at 11-6 and 11-2 to close out the victory. F&M's third win on the day came from Liz Gatling at No. 8 who swept her opponent in three games (11-9, 11-8, 11-7).
Dana Rapisarda battled from the No. 9 position, earning a 12-10 win in her opening game but was unable to hold the lead as Amherst's Lena Rice went on to win three straight (11-6, 11-6, 11-5).
Some Diplomats may compete at the CSA Individual Championships hosted by Penn. on Friday. The three-day tournament runs until Sunday and competitors will be announced at a later time. Check back to GoDiplomats.com for updates.
