Diplomats Slip Past Shorewomen

LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 4 Franklin & Marshall used a 5-1 run in the second half to erase a one-point deficit enroute to 14-11 victory over Washington in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on rain-soaked Tylus Field Saturday afternoon.  The Diplomats improved to 8-2, 2-0 CC while Washington fell to 4-3, 0-1 CC.  

Trailing 7-6 at halftime, F&M outscored Washington 5-1 in the opening 17 minutes of the second half and took an 11-8 lead. Anastasia Mergner started the run with an unassisted goal two minutes into the half to make it 7-7, but Carley Kendall netted a score for the Shorewomen to go up 8-7. The Diplomats countered with four straight with Caroline Krohn tallying the first two scores to put the Diplomats up for good. Casey Madden made it 10-8 at 15:44 and Emily Everdell struck unassisted two minutes later for an 11-8 F&M lead. 

Kimberly Abruzzo scored twice in under a minute with her first coming off a free position and the second off a fed from Madden for a 13-9 F&M lead at 9:00. Washington put one through before Natalie Delinsky scored to make 14-10 and Emily Hubley managed the last goal of the game for Shorewomen. 

The Diplomats appeared to be in control early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead just seven minutes into action. Everdell picked up the first two goals for F&M while Madden and Brittney Jorgenson netted goals three and four. Katherine Vincent brought Washington within two, 4-2, before Grace Saliba buried a pass from Ali Kelly to put F&M up 5-2 at 16:58.

Washington countered with five unanswered points and took a 7-5 edge with 1:23 left to break. The Diplomats answered when Mary Mitchell found the back of the net with just one second left to halftime to bring F&M within a goal, 7-6, at the break. 

Everdell led F&M with three goals while Krohn, Madden and Abruzzo each finished with two. Hubley paced the Shorewomen with four scores and Vincent ended the contest with three. 

Sarah Bozzo paced the F&M defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Kelsey Hoffman improved to 6-2 with eight saves while Allison Remenapp took the loss with 10 stops. 

F&M held a slight 32-28 edge in shots and went 18-for-21 in clear attempts. 

The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M travels to Bryn Mawr for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
