Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Brandon Federici scored a game-high 28 points to lead No. 20 Franklin & Marshall to an 84-76 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats moved to 17-2, 10-2 CC this season while the Garnet dropped to 8-11, 4-8 CC.
The win completes the season sweep over the Garnet and improved F&M's CC record against Swarthmore to 31-4 as the Diplomats have won four straight.
F&M jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with three pointers by Matthew Tate, Federici and Devin Figueroa in the first four minutes of action. Swarthmore answered and came within two, 11-9, before the Diplomats countered with a 21-6 run and went up 32-15 with 7:35 left in the half. The Diplomats held a double-digit advantage the remainder of the half and finished off the period by outscoring the Garnet 12-7 in the final four minutes for a 48-30 lead.
Federici had 15 in the opening frame while Cedric Moune and Figueroa both tallied eight.
The Diplomats led by 18 points three minutes into the second before Swarthmore went on a 6-1 spurt to come within 12, 57-45, with 15:04 left in the game. F&M went on an 11-0 run three minutes later to take its largest lead of the game, 72-51, at 11:15. F&M maintained a double-digit edge over the next four minutes before Swarthmore put together a 13-3 run and came within 10, 79-69, with 1:43 left to play. The Garnet got within eight down the stretch, but key throws by Moune and Federici kept a three-possession lead for the Diplomats.
Federici shot 7-for-15 from the floor and added four assists while Figueroa and Moune both tallied 13 points. Jared Wright chipped in 11 and Morgan Lee netted eight points with five assists and five boards.
Chris Bourne led the Garnet with 20 points, Karl Barkley finished with 19 and Zack Yonda had 12 for Swarthmore.
F&M outshot Swarthmore 51-48 percent and forced 21 turnovers that resulted in 21 points.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M hosts conference-leader No. 18 Johns Hopkins at 8:00 p.m.
