Diplomats Slip by Bears

LANCASTER, Pa. — No. 20 Franklin & Marshall edged Ursinus 63-57 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Tuesday evening at the Mayser Center. F&M improved to 5-1, 2-0 CC while the Bears dropped to 1-3, 0-2 CC. 

Glenn Robinson picked up career win 895 and is five victories away from becoming just the fourth coach to reach 900 NCAA wins. 

F&M took an early 9-0 lead almost six minutes into the game and a Lior Levy triple made it 12-5 with a little under 13 minutes left in action. Ursinus answered and went on an 18-6 run over the next seven minutes to take a 23-18 lead at 5:29. Nicholas Stern tallied five straight to tie the game and the teams traded points over the next few minutes before Stern chipped in another four to put F&M up 30-27 with 1:33 left to break. The Bears hit two from the line in the final seconds of the half to make it 30-29 at halftime. 

Stern led F&M with eight points in the opening frame while Eggers knocked in seven for the Diplomats. 

Ursinus opened the second with four straight to take a 33-30 edge and the Diplomats countered with a 7-1 spurt to go up 37-34. Six lead changes ensued over the next five minutes with the Bears clinging to a 45-44 lead before F&M tallied six straight to take the lead for good. A Levy jumped put F&M up seven, 55-48, and a 5-0 spurt made it a two-point game before Matthew Tate scored five of his own to put the Diplomats back up seven. F&M led by as many seven points down the stretch to secure the win. 

Brandon Federici struggled from the floor, but finished with a team-high 14 points. He added four assist, three blocks and two steals for F&M. Tate tallied 11 and Eggers shot 4-for-9 for 10 points. Cedric Moune hauled in a game-high 12 boards, scored seven points and had four blocks. 

Remi Janicot led Ursinus with 13 and Matt Knowles had 11 for the Bears. 

F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats host Washington at 3:00 p.m.
