CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 14 Franklin & Marshall women's squash team fell by a 6-3 score against No. 11 Brown on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Kurtz Cup (B Division) at the 2015 CSA Team Championships.
The Diplomats dropped to 9-8 on the year and will compete in the consolation semifinals tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. against the loser of No. 15 Drexel or No. 10 Stanford. The Bears improved to 6-8 and advance into the brackets semifinal round to face the winner of that matchup.
F&M did not allow Brown to breeze into the next round as the Diplomats were swept at only one position in the order. The top of the ladder was dominant on the day as the top three all garnered wins for F&M. Sherilyn Yang (No. 1) downed her opponent by a 3-1 score (9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 14-12), Fiona Murphy was in control at No. 2 with a 3-0 sweep (11-8, 11-9, 11-6) and Lauren Johnston (No. 3) rolled to a 3-0 blanking of her opponent with an 11-6, 12-10, 11-8 tally.
It was a battle at nearly every spot in the lineup. Andreina Benedith (No. 5) secured a back-and-forth 14-12 win in her opening game, before falling in three straight, including a heartbreaking 18-16 marathon loss in the third frame. Katherine Perry (No. 8) and Kate O'Brien (No. 9) also put the opposition on their heels with opening-game wins, but were overcome in the next three frames for a pair of 3-1 defeats.
