Diplomats Battle Blue Jays

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall suffered a 70-53 setback at the hands of Johns Hopkins on Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action. The Diplomats fell to 5-15, 2-11 CC, while the Blue Jays improved to 13-7, 10-4 CC.

F&M began the game strong, as a Sarah Haddon jumper followed by an Emily Wetz 3-pointer gave the Diplomats an early 5-0 advantage with 18:53 remaining in the first. However, Hopkins answered and delivered a 23-5 spurt, spanning over 13 minutes of play, to take a 27-10 lead at the 5:19 mark.

The Diplomats came roaring back with a 16-8 run to end the half, and F&M trailed by only nine points (35-26) heading into intermission.

In the first half, Erica Brown led all scorers with 10 points, while Anajha Burnett and Emily Wetz chipped in five.

To begin action in the second half, Haddon connected on a jumper to bring the Diplomats to within seven at 35-28 with 19:13 to go in the contest. But, the Blue Jays put together another run, this time a 17-4 spurt, to go ahead 52-32 with 12:19 remaining in the game.

Hopkins extended the lead to as many as 24 points throughout the rest of the game, as the Blue Jays went on to win by a score of 70-53.

For F&M, despite early foul trouble that only allowed her to play 20 minutes, Haddon finished with a game-high 15 points, while Brown recorded 12 and Burnett 10.

Katie Clark and Liz Tommasi both registered 13 points to lead Hopkins, while Beatriz Williams notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Stacy Fairey and Maggie Fruehan scored 10 points apiece.

The Blue Jays dominated on the glass, notching 56 rebounds to the Diplomats' 34, while Hopkins also held the edge in shooting at 39.1-31.7 percent.

F&M continues CC action on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when the Diplomats travel to take on Washington.
