Diplomats Take One of Two from Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Isabel Schaefer tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Franklin & Marshall softball team to a 3-0 win in game one over non-conference opponent Penn St.-Brandywine on Thursday afternoon, while in the nightcap, the Diplomats were outslugged by the Lions 11-7. F&M moved to 17-9, while Brandywine now sits at 13-6.

Schaefer dominated the Lions' lineup in the first game, as the freshman allowed just one hit, a single through the right side by Julia Allman in the top of the fourth.

The Diplomats scored all three runs in the bottom of the second, beginning with a Katie Zogorski single to left center that scored Patricia Crigler, who doubled to left, to give F&M a 1-0 advantage. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Melissa Bollmeyer singled up the middle to score Kelly Van O'Linda and Karly Newcomb for a 3-0 lead.

Schaefer (8-7) struck out eight batters in the complete-game effort, increasing her single-season strikeout mark to 92, just six away from the F&M record held by Bonnie Crouthamel who recorded 98 in 2006.

Bollmeyer was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, while Crigler also finished with two hits.

Game two was quite different from the first, as the two teams combined for 18 runs, 27 hits and seven errors. Brandywine wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Robyn Gannon reached on a throwing error to score Lindsey Dellavecchio to make it 1-0 and Katie Steffen roped a double to right-center to put runners on second and third. Lauryn Geduldick followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Lions' lead.

The Diplomats took advantage of a few errors in the bottom of the first, as Bollmeyer scored on a wild pitch the cut the lead in half at 2-1. After Erin Russell advanced to third on a passed ball, Megan Ryan singled her home to tie the contest at 2-2. Later in the frame, Zogorski hit a single through the left side to score Ryan and give F&M an early 3-2 lead.

After Samantha Burns' RBI-single increased the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second and Ryan's RBI-single made it 5-2, in the top of the third with two runners on, Steffen's double down the left field line scored a run to make it 5-3. Geduldick then reached on an error to plate another run and bring Brandywine to within one at 5-4.

After the Lions tacked on four more in the top of the fourth for an 8-5 cushion, the Diplomats chipped away in the bottom of the inning, as Crigler crushed a ball to left center for a triple and two RBIs, making the score 8-7. Brandywine pushed three more across the board in the top of the fifth and F&M was unable to mount a comeback, falling 11-7 in the nightcap.

Ryan was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Diplomats, adding three RBIs, and Burns was 3-for-5 while Crigler notched two hits and two RBIs.

Justine Lohrey (4-2) suffered the loss in four innings of action.

Steffen led the Lions' offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Dellavecchio added three hits and two RBIs.

F&M is back in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to Dickinson for a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
