Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gabby Frank, Paige Moriarty and Brittney Jorgenson netted four goals each to lead No. 3 Franklin & Marshall to a 14-9 victory over No. 13 Catholic in women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 11-1 while the Cardinals dropped to 8-3.
F&M took control early and jumped out to a 5-0 lead 10 minutes into the game. Anastasia Mergner found Emily Everdell just three minutes into the contest for the first tally before Jorgenson netted back-to-back goals off feeds from Morairty and Natalie Delinsky for a 3-0 edge. Frank made it 4-0 on a free position at 21:06 and Mergner picked up her second helper when she found Grace Saliba for a score to put the Diplomats up 5-0.
Catholic managed its first point at 8:37 and the Diplomats answered with three straight and took an 8-1 lead into the break. Jorgenson started the run at 8:21 with a goal off a pass from Megan Kelly before Saliba and Frank connected at 7:29 and Moriarty capped off the run on a free position goal at 3:21.
Morairty made it 9-1 early in the second and the Cardinals responded with two goals in two minutes to make it 9-3. Saliba fed Jorgenson a little over a minute later before the Cardinals picked up another pair of goals to come within five, 10-5, at 16:11.
The Diplomats countered with a four-goal run in four minutes to put the game out of reach. Frank started things off with back-to-back goals and Moriarty picked up two of her own off passes from Kelly and Jorgenson to put F&M up 14-5 with 9:22 left to play. The Cardinals finished strong with four goals in the final eight minutes of action, but could not overcome the early deficit.
Kelly added a game-high seven ground balls with two caused turnovers while Kaitlin Hardt picked up the win with 10 saves and Tricia Pehnke took the loss with 12 stops for the Cardinals.
F&M outshot Catholic 33-28, went 13-11 in draws and were successful on 13-of-16 clear attempts.
The Diplomats return to action Saturday when F&M hosts Swarthmore at 1:00 p.m.
