Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Franklin & Marshall outscored Washington 22-4 in the third quarter, posting an emphatic 59-42 victory on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference women's basketball. With the victory, the Diplomats improved to 4-11, 3-6 CC while the Shorewomen fell to 3-10, 0-7.
F&M entered the second half trailing 19-17, but a pair of free throws from Anajha Burnett and a three-point play from Haley Pilone quickly erased the deficit, giving the Diplomats a 22-19 edge with 7:25 left in the period. A Washington bucket brought the Shorewomen back within one, but F&M countered with a 15-0 run, capped off by a Burnett trey, to take a 16-point, 37-21 advantage with 42 seconds left in the third. The sophomore guard added two free throws with eight seconds left, giving her 13 points in the quarter as the Diplomats took a commanding 39-23 lead into the final stanza.
Two more free throws from Burnett and a three from Pilone removed any possibility of a comeback as F&M went up 44-23 with 8:38 left in the fourth. Washington would pull as close as 13, but was unable to get within striking distance in the remaining minutes as the Diplomats cruised to the seventeen-point win.
The first quarter showed a preview of F&M's ascendancy, jumping out to leads of 5-0 and 11-2. Erica Brown finished off the quarter with a jumper to give the Diplomats a nine-point advantage before recording a pair of resounding blocks on the ensuing Washington possession. After one, F&M led 13-4.
The Shorewomen reclaimed the momentum in the second, outscoring the Diplomats 15-4 in the period to post a slim two-point lead at halftime.
Burnett totaled 19 points on the day, and was joined in double-digits by Pilone with 15 and Brown with 14.
Brown also tallied 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double and her sixth of the season. Lindsey Powers also notched twelve boards on the day.
Alexis Krahling led Washington with nine points, followed by Katherine Moore with eight off the bench.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday, visiting Gettysburg at 6:00 p.m. for another CC battle.
