McDaniel Holds Off F&M

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall hosted conference-leading McDaniel on Monday night in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball, dropping a tight 64-60 decision to the Green Terror. The Diplomats fell to 4-13, 3-8 CC while McDaniel moved to 14-3, 9-1 with the victory.

The Green Terror, leading 48-38 after three quarters, looked set to claim an easy victory when a Jasmine Smith layup extended a 54-40 lead with 8:58 left in the fourth. However, 11 points from Lindsey Powers keyed a 16-2 F&M run that tied the game at 56 with 1:53 remaining.

A bucket and a free throw from McDaniel returned the lead to three with 44 ticks remaining, but Sarah Pisani found Sarah Haddon for a layup that cut the lead to one, 59-58, with 37 seconds left. The Green Terror responded with clutch foul shooting, making five of six from the charity stripe in the remaining seconds to escape 64-60 winners.

The opening half provided plenty of back-and-forth action as neither team led by more than three in the first quarter. Five different Diplomats scored field goals as the Green Terror took a narrow 13-12 lead after one.

McDaniel put together an 8-2 spurt to begin the second, taking a 21-14 lead three minutes into the second stanza. F&M replied with a 13-4 run, fueled by seven straight points from Haddon, to take a 27-25 edge into the locker room.

The momentum returned to the Green Terror early in the third as CC scoring leader Lindsey Nichols tallied four quick points, driving a 10-0 McDaniel run that gave the visitors a 35-27 edge. A three from Powers cut the lead back to five, but the Diplomats nonetheless found themselves in a 10-point hole entering the final period.

Haddon led all scorers and tied a career high with 26 points, while also recording eight rebounds and a game-high three blocks on the night.

Powers poured in 22 for F&M, setting a career high and earning the first double-double of her career with 12 rebounds.

Pisani finished the night with eight assists, six of them coming in the second half.

McDaniel was led by Karli Zeps with 20 points, while Smith (19) and Nichols (18) both joined her in double figures.

The Diplomats return to the court on Wednesday, visiting Dickinson at 6:00 p.m. in Carlisle.
