Diplomats Drop Garnet in OT Thriller

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – An Anajha Burnett three with 10 seconds remaining tied the game and sent Franklin & Marshall into overtime, eventually defeating Swarthmore 64-59 on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball. With the victory, F&M's second in a row, the Diplomats improved to 3-9, 2-4 in CC play while the Garnet fell to 3-9, 2-4 with the loss.

Trailing 55-52 following a Swarthmore foul shot, F&M regained possession with 25 seconds remaining. With 10 ticks left Burnett found herself in space near the top of the key, hitting from behind the arc to knot the game at 55 and send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, a pair of baskets from Erica Brown on either side of a three from Swarthmore gave the Diplomats a slim 59-58 lead. However, Burnett again came through with another three to push the lead to four, 62-58. That lead proved to be enough as Burnett and AnnMarie DiCarlo each hit a free throw down the stretch to ice the 64-59 victory.

In the early going, it was Haley Pilone with the hot hand from behind the arc, opening the game with a three straight treys to give F&M a 9-0 lead. The Diplomats pushed that lead to as much as 11-0, but Swarthmore fought back to trail by just two, 11-9, after the first.

Another Pilone three with 6:35 left in the second pushed the F&M lead back to six, 20-14. Once more the Garnet responded, putting together a 10-0 run to take a 24-20 lead with 2:19 left before halftime. However, a pair of layups from Shannon O'Connor and Pilone evened the score at 24 at the end of the first half.

The early minutes of the third quarter belonged to Swarthmore, employing a 12-3 run to lead by as much as eight, 39-31, with 4:14 left in the period. This time the Diplomats responded, using a pair of baskets from Sarah Haddon to close the gap to 43-40 after three.

A pair of free throws from Haley Raymond returned Swarthmore's lead to seven, 49-42, early in the final stanza. F&M again showed its resiliency, riding a 10-2 run to take a 52-51 lead with 1:13 left before four Garnet free throws set the stage for Burnett's late drama.

Brown and Pilone led the way for F&M, recording 21 points each. Brown also pulled in 12 boards to complete her fourth double-double of the year.

Burnett finished with nine points, while Haddon totaled seven points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.

Jessica Jowdy and Maggie O'Neill each posted 14 points to lead Swarthmore.

F&M returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Haverford for a 6:00 p.m. battle.
