Diplomats Down Crusaders for First Victory of the Season

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sean Rogers and Mike Wasik combined for five goals and four assists to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 12-9 victory over Susquehanna Wednesday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 1-2 while the Crusaders fell to 3-1.

F&M set the tone early with four straight in first eight minutes of action. Wasik found Read Zeigler just 1:02 into the game for the first score and Rogers fed Michael Bossidy at 8:30 to make it 2-0. Brendan Kenavan kept the spurt going with a tally at the seven-minute mark and Wasik finished things off with an unassisted tally at 6:19 for a 4-0 F&M lead.

The Crusaders answered with two straight heading into the second to make it 4-2 before Kenavan scored at 9:47 to put the Diplomats up 5-2 at 9:47 in the second. The teams traded points the remainder of the quarter with F&M taking a 7-5 edge into the break. Zeigler and Mike Rama had F&M's two scores with George Briggs assisting on Rama's score.

Susquehanna made it a one-point game, 7-6, early in third and the Diplomats answered with two straight and took a 9-6 lead with 6:51 on the clock. Rogers netted the first score before finding Bossidy for the second score.

Two straight goals by the Crusaders made it 9-8 early in the fourth, but the Diplomats responded with two of their and took an 11-8 lead with 10:50 left to play. Wasik struck for the first tally and found Rogers for the second a little over a minute later. The Crusaders tack one more on the board at 9:17 and Rogers put the last point on the board with an unassisted goal with 7:04 left in the game.

Rogers finished with three goals and two helpers on four shots and Wasik ended with a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Bossidy, Kenavan and Zeigler all struck twice; Rama recorded a goal, and Briggs finished with an assist.

Anthony Dougherty, Wes Rhudy and Nick Wells all caused three turnovers to lead the defense. Dougherty collected six ground balls while Thomas O'Connor and Rhudy came away with four ground balls apiece.

Thomas Moore picked up the win and improved to 1-2 with seven saves and six ground balls. Dylan Abplanalp took the loss with 11 stops.

F&M forced 22 turnovers and held a 33-21 edge in ground balls while going 18-for-21 in clear attempts.

The Diplomats returns to action on Saturday when F&M hosts Washington & Lee at 2:00 p.m.
