Diplomats Dropped By Green Terror

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall fell victim to timely hitting from McDaniel on Sunday afternoon, dropping two games to the Green Terror in a Centennial Conference (CC) softball doubleheader. The Diplomats fell to 12-10, 1-5 CC with the losses while McDaniel improved to 14-10, 6-2 CC.

The Green Terror scored two in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 decision in game one.

Scoring was sparse in the early going as F&M hurler Katie Wenger pitched five scoreless innings to begin the day, forcing McDaniel to wait until the fifth inning to record its first hit. Wenger also accounted for the first Diplomat run of the day, launching a solo home run to left field that gave F&M a 1-0 lead that lasted into the sixth.

McDaniel got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Diplomats responded in the bottom of the sixth with another solo home run, this time by Sam Burns, to tie the game at 2-2 entering the seventh.

The Green Terror scored twice more in the top of the seventh, and McDaniel pitcher Jamie Weisser (3-2) got out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh to record the win, 4-3.

Wenger (7-3) was saddled with the loss after giving up four earned runs on six hits in seven innings of work. She also struck four while giving up just one walk.

Wenger, Burns, and Samantha Clemens paced the Diplomats with one RBI apiece. Eight Diplomats recorded hits in the game, but no player notched more than one.

The second game of the day, a 13-7 win for the Green Terror, started with a bang as the visitors scored five runs in the top of the first to take a 5-0 lead. That lead grew to 6-0 after two, but F&M fought back with three runs in the bottom of the third, courtesy of a three-run triple from Wenger.

McDaniel extended its lead to 10-3 with four more in the top of the fifth, a lead that was reduced to 10-4 when F&M's Taylor Long homered to left center in the home half of the frame. In the bottom of the sixth a three-run shot from Burns cut the deficit to 10-7, but the Green Terror put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with three runs to make the score 13-7, its final tally.

Isabel Schaefer (4-6) took the loss for the Diplomats after giving up eight earned runs in fourth innings pitched. Megan Ryan took over for Schaefer and allowed five runs, two of them earned, in three innings pitched.

Clemens went 2-for-3 with a walk to reach base three times. Wenger and Burns also paced the F&M offense with three RBIs each. Burns' two home runs on the day gave her three total on the season, tying her with Wenger for the team high.

The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Penn St.-Abington for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
