Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall and Elizabethtown met Thursday afternoon for a pair of non-conference softball games, with each team taking away one half of the twin bill. The Diplomats are now 13-11 with the split, while the Blue Jays stand at 11-17.
F&M dropped game one as Elizabethtown hurler Ashley Hullihan twirled a one-hit shutout to earn the 3-0 win for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown took the lead in the top of the fourth, pushing across a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. Diplomat starter Katie Wenger gave up her only earned run of the day in the seventh as the Blue Jays extended their advantage to the final tally of 3-0.
F&M's best chance to score came in the bottom of the second, beginning with a Megan Ryan single through the right side, which proved to be the only Diplomat hit of the contest. She was followed by Samantha Clemens, who appeared to beat out a bunt single that advanced Ryan to second. However, Clemens was called out and Ryan returned to first base after the home plate umpire ruled that Clemens had left the batter's box early, blunting the potential rally.
Wenger (7-4) took the loss despite giving up just one earned run. She struck out three while the Blue Jays managed nine hits on the Diplomat ace.
F&M got back on track in game two, as Isabel Schaefer threw a shutout of her own in a 5-0 Diplomat win.
Elizabethtown looked set to score in the early going, recording one hit in the first and two in the second, but Schaefer escaped both frames without giving up a run. The sophomore settled down, and the Blue Jays would have to wait until the sixth to record another hit.
F&M got on the board in the bottom of the first as Wenger laced a triple that scored Erin Russell all the way from first. That lead grew to 2-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly from Taylor Long that plated Kelly Van O'Linda from third. In the bottom of the sixth, the Diplomats added more insurance as Russell hit a solo home run before Wenger deposited a two-run shot over the centerfield fence that made the score 5-0.
Schaefer (5-6) claimed the win after giving up zero runs on six hits. She struck out six and did not surrender a walk in the effort.
Wenger went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the F&M offense. Enrica Fabricant and Kathleen Zogorski joined Van O'Linda, Russell, and Long with a hit in game two.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday, visiting Swarthmore for a crucial Centennial Conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
