F&M Wins Game One In Senior Day Split With Dickinson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall hosted Dickinson on Saturday afternoon for a pair of Centennial Conference (CC) games with serious playoff implications, winning game one 5-2 before falling 7-1 in the second tilt. The Diplomats are now 19-15, 6-8 CC with the split, but will miss out on CC Playoffs as they can longer finish in the top four at the end of the regular season.

F&M jumped on Dickinson early in the day's first contest, tallying a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Katie Wenger started the scoring with a double to right center that plated Kelly Van O'Linda, and Wenger would cross the plate herself later in the inning, aggressively scoring from first on Erin Russell's single to center field.

A Samantha Clemens single up the middle scored Megan Ryan in the bottom of the second, and a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Ryan in the third gave the Diplomats a 4-0 lead after three.

The Red Devils finally touched up F&M starter Isabel Schaefer in the fourth with a two run homer to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, Schaefer did not allow another run the rest of the way and an RBI single from Ryan in the fifth gave the Diplomats enough room to secure the 5-2 victory.

Schaefer earned the win for F&M, giving up just two runs on six hits in seven innings of work. The sophomore also struck out five in the game.

Wenger went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Diplomat offense. Ryan's two RBIs were a team high, while Russell and Ryan joined Wenger with two hits apiece.

Following game one F&M honored its' lone senior, Patricia Crigler, as she played the final home contests of her career. Entering the day, the Chatham, N.J. native ranked in the top 10 in program history in home runs, doubles, and fielding percentage in the top 20 of several other categories.

Dickinson did not wait to jump on Schaefer as she started the second game of the day as well, tallying one run in the first following a leadoff double. However, the Diplomats responded in the home half of the first as Wenger drove in Van O'Linda with a single to left field.

Schaefer again settled down, and pitched scoreless softball until the sixth inning (her thirteenth inning of work), when she was replaced by Ryan after giving up two runs and leaving two on base. Wenger eventually finished the inning, but the damage was done as the Red Devils scored two more to take a 5-1 lead. A pair of Dickinson runs in the seventh and two scoreless frames from the Diplomats gave the Red Devils game two, 7-1.

Schaefer (9-7) took the loss in the nightcap to go 1-1 on the day. She allowed four earned in 5 1/3 innings, striking out two and surrendering two walks.

Van O'Linda and Sam Burns both went 2-for-3 in game two to pace the F&M bats. Wenger logged the lone Diplomat RBI of the game as Dickinson held the hosts to five hits in the contest.

Haverford's victory over Swarthmore eliminates F&M from the conference playoff picture, as the Diplomats can no longer catch the top four teams in the conference.

F&M finishes up regular-season action on Saturday, visiting Muhlenberg for a twin bill beginning at 2:00 p.m.
