F&M Drops Muhlenberg in Extras to Salvage Split in Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall headed to Allentown on Saturday afternoon to take on Muhlenberg in a Centennial Conference (CC) softball doubleheader, falling in game one 8-2 before grabbing a 3-2 victory in eight innings in the second contest. The games conclude the Diplomats' season, giving them a record of 20-16, 7-9 CC on the year.

The Mules went ahead early in game one, scoring four runs on F&M starter Isabel Schaefer in the bottom of the first. Muhlenberg scratched out two more in the third, taking a 6-0 lead after three.

F&M showed signs of life in the sixth, as Taylor Long opened the Diplomat scoring by driving in Samantha Clemens with a double to right. Erin Russell added an RBI of her own later in the inning, knocking in Long with a single. However, two more runs from the Mules in the bottom of the sixth and a scoreless top of the seventh gave the hosts the first clash of the day 8-2.

Schaefer (9-8) took the loss for F&M after giving up eight runs, seven of them earned, in six innings.

Enrica Fabricant and Katie Wenger both went 2-for-3 to pace the Diplomat batters in game one.

The second meeting of the day did not feature many offensive fireworks in the early going, as a Karly Newcomb RBI in the top of the second was the only run scored by either side in the first five frames. That lead was extended to 2-0 in the top of the sixth when Megan Ryan singled down the leftfield line to score Kelly Van O'Linda.

The Mules quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the sixth, notching a two-run home run to even the score at two. A scoreless seventh forced extra innings, but with one down in the top of the seventh Sam Burns launched a solo shot to left field, giving F&M a 3-2 lead.

Wenger, who started game two for the Diplomats, returned to the circle for an eighth inning, shutting down Muhlenberg in the frame to give F&M an extra-inning victory in its season finale, 3-2.

The win went to Wenger (9-7) as she allowed two runs on eight hits, striking out four in eight innings of work.

Burns posted a 2-for-3 mark with a walk and two runs scored. Ryan and Newcomb joined her with an RBI each to lead the Diplomats at the plate.

The doubleheader signals the end of F&M's season, marking a record of 20-16, 7-9 CC in 2016.
