YORK, Pa. — No. 5 Franklin & Marshall fell 2-0 to York on Wednesday afternoon in NCAA field hockey action. The loss is the first for F&M this season as the Diplomats dropped to 3-1, while the Spartans remain unbeaten at 5-0. 

York took an early 1-0 edge 15 minutes into the game when Paige Taylor struck on a penalty corner. Annie Horsley had a chance to tie the game at 19:46, but her shot was turned away by York's keeper Eve Hauptle. F&M came up empty on three corners in the next three minutes and fired off one more shot later in the half, before heading into the break trailing 1-0. 

F&M took control in the opening minutes of the final frame with three shots and four corners in first five minutes of the second, but could not find the back of the net. York countered with an offensive flurry of their own and also could not score. Sydney Cole and Sarah Schannauer both had good look late in the game with Hauptle stopping both to keep the Diplomats off the board.

Horsley saw F&M last scoring chance in the 64th minute, but her shot was saved and the Spartans tacked on the final score on an open net with just 17 ticks on the clock to secure the victory. 

Ilianna Santangelo stood tall in goal turning away nine shots in 90 minutes of action, but suffered her first loss and dropped to 3-1. Hauptle picked up the win for the Spartans with six stops and went to 5-0 this season. 

Shots belonged to York (20-13) with the Diplomats holding a 15-12 edge in corners. 

The Diplomats will look to bounce back on Saturday when F&M opens Centennial Conference action by hosting Swarthmore at 12:00 p.m.
