Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team held tough on the road against one of the nation's top squads, but eventually succumbed to No. 9 Swarthmore by a 3-0 score on Saturday afternoon to open the 2016 Centennial Conference (CC) slate.
The Diplomats fell to 2-4, 0-1 CC with the defeat while the Garnet remained unbeaten at 7-0, 1-0 CC.
Neither team located the back of the net until the 24th minute when Swarthmore's Marin McCoy fed a ball through the back line that found the foot of Hannah Lichtenstein, who finished to the far post for the 1-0 advantage.
F&M struggled to generate offense in the opening stanza and went into the break still seeking its first shot, compared to 12 from Swarthmore.
In the 59th minute, the Garnet struck again by scoring off a ball that made its way through the right side of the Diplomats' defense, before another Swarthmore goal in the 69th minute, off a deflection in the box, wrapped up the scoring.
Nicole Savidge (2-4) was charged with the loss, allowing three goals and recording five saves through 90 minutes. Amy Shmoys (2-0) was the winning goalkeeper for Swarthmore after stopping the only shot she faced.
Overall, shots favored the Garnet at 23-2, as well as corners at 11-2. Sarah Mischianti and Reanna Leoni tallied both of the Diplomats' opportunities.
F&M makes a return to non-conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Penn St.-Harrisburg for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
