Diplomats Cruise Past Chargers in Opener

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team took three straight sets from Lancaster Bible College to notch a 3-0 victory in its first match of the 2016 season on Friday night. The Diplomats moved to 1-0 with the victory while the Chargers fell to 0-1.

Back and forth action in the opening set saw Lancaster Bible open up a slim 13-11 lead at the midway point. However, F&M responded with six straight points, largely thanks to quality service from Parys Zambas, to take a 17-13 lead. The Chargers got as close as one at 20-19, but kills from Ellie Ezekiel, Grace Polisano, and Sarah Landry gave the Diplomats a 23-20 edge and eventually a 25-22 win in the set.

Ezekiel logged four kills in the set as F&M notched 15 kills with Lancaster Bible recording just 9.

The Chargers looked set to take the second frame, up 17-15 in the later stages, but Zambas again scored five straight points on her serve to give the Diplomats a 21-17 edge. She was helped by two kills from Cassie Garison, who also split a block with Polisano in the rally. Four different F&M players logged kills in the final four points as the Diplomats took a 25-21 decision in the set.

Christine Yoo recorded four kills in the frame, including the clincher, as the Diplomats hit a game-high .243 in the second.

F&M left no doubt in the third as Allison Edelstein served the Diplomats to a 9-0 lead to start the frame. The Chargers never got closer than six as Zambas fittingly served out the set, giving the Diplomats a 25-18 win in the third and a clean sweep overall.

Ezekiel led the attack with 10 kills, followed by Yoo with seven and Polisano with six. Landry added five.

Edelstein notched 32 assists on the night, while Mary Leneweaver pulled out 18 digs to lead the defense.

Early-season play continues tomorrow as the Diplomats host Elizabethtown at 11:00 a.m. and Penn State-Berks at 1:00 p.m.
