COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team was undone by a 72nd-minute goal that broke a scoreless contest and resulted in a tough 1-0 loss to Ursinus on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) play.
The Diplomats fell to 4-6-1, 1-4-1 CC while the Bears earned their first win of the season to improve to 1-7-2, 1-3-1 CC.
F&M appeared to be dictating action before Ursinus broke away with the game-winning marker. The Bear's Angela Gervasi got the play started by threading a ball from the right side that was tipped past the Diplomats' goalkeeper by Bridget Rauh.
A Meghan Byrne corner less than a minute later threatened to tie the contest, but F&M was unable to generate a scoring opportunity as Ursinus' defense held strong throughout the remainder of the frame.
Shots were even at 9-9 in the game while corners belonged to the Diplomats by a 9-4 margin, including a 7-3 edge in the second half. Ursinus managed just two shots on goal, compared to five from F&M.
Goalkeeper Gabby Panayotakis (4-6-1) was charged with the loss after stopping one shot in 90 minutes of competition. Sabrina Doherty (1-3) registered five saves for the shutout win.
Reanna Leoni led the Diplomat offense with three shots, including a pair on goal.
F&M returns to the pitch on Wednesday, hosting Gettysburg for a 4:00 p.m. game at Tylus Field.
