F&M Smothers Carroll, Battles No. 14 Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Franklin & Marshall continued spring break action on Thursday, notching a 4-1 victory over Carroll (Wisc.) before falling 1-0 to No. 14 Wisconsin-Eau Claire in extra innings. The Diplomats moved to 2-6 with the split.

Carroll opened the scoring in the first game, manufacturing a run thanks to a single and an F&M error for a 1-0 Pioneers lead after one half inning. The Diplomats immediately responded in the bottom of the first, as a hit from Sam Clemens and a walk from Katie Wenger started a rally that saw two Carroll errors hand the home team a 3-1 lead after one.

Wenger, who started the game for F&M, settled down in the following innings, scattering four hits in the next six frames. The Diplomat hurler moved to 1-3 on the year with the win, striking out three and giving up zero earned runs in seven innings of work.

F&M got some insurance in the bottom of the fourth as Crystal Good singled through the right side to start the inning. Good advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored the Diplomats' fourth run after a throwing error allowed her to score from second.

Good led the offense with two hits, reaching base in all three at-bats after being hit by a pitch in the second. Megan Ryan, Lexi Piccinich, Taylor Long, and Clemens all notched hits.

A true pitcher's duel followed in the second game, as F&M and No. 14 UW-Eau Claire went into the eighth inning tied 0-0. The Diplomats were unable to score in the eighth, and a sacrifice fly from the Blugolds gave UW-EC the 1-0 victory.

F&M starter Izzy Schaefer (1-3) was fantastic throughout, holding the No. 14 Blugolds to two hits over 7.1 innings. Her six strikeouts were backed up by some excellent defense by the Diplomats, including a fifth inning that saw Clemens go deep in the hole to record an out before Wenger pulled in a foul ball over her shoulder for the second out of the inning.

Doubles from Kelly Van O'Linda and Clemens gave the Diplomats scoring opportunities, but F&M was unable to get on the board despite recording three hits compared to just two for UW-EC.

The Diplomats round out spring break play tomorrow with games against Ramapo and Skidmore at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
