LANCASTER, Pa. – Erin Coverdale led Franklin & Marshall's No. 14 field hockey team with all three goals to give the Diplomats a 3-0 victory over Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon to open Centennial Conference (CC) play.
The Diplomats improved to 4-1, 1-0 CC while the Mules fell to 1-4, 0-1 CC.

F&M came out strong looking to score early in the opening half, but back-to-back shots from Sydney Cole were saved by the Mules' goalie in the second and third minutes of play.
Muhlenberg retaliated, firing three quick shots in the 10th minute, but Diplomat goalkeeper Ilianna Santangelo remained steadfast and kept the game even at 0-0.
The Diplomats looked to get on the board with a shot from Katie O'Loughlin in the 33rd minute, but a save from Emma Rosenthal kept the match tied going into the half.
F&M charged down the field to start the second half and were allotted a penalty corner in the early minutes. Following the insert, Coverdale tallied the first goal of the day off a pass from Emily Nagle to give the Diplomats the 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Coverdale scored her second goal of the game off a move into the middle of the circle and placing the ball in the back of the cage to extend the lead, 2-0.
Muhlenberg tried to get on the board in the 48th minute, but two quick saves from Santangelo helped the Diplomats remain on top.
Coverdale completed the hat trick in the 68th minute, chipping the ball past the goalie off a rebound from her own shot, increasing the lead, 3-0.
F&M dominated shots, 32-9, and carried the advantage in penalty corners, 19-6.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Dickinson for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
