LANCASTER, Pa. – A trio of Erin Coverdale goals and a staunch defensive effort keyed Franklin & Marshall's No. 13 field hockey in a dominant 3-0 shutout of Haverford on Saturday afternoon.
The Centennial Conference (CC) victory improved the Diplomats to 6-1, 3-0 CC on the year while the Fords fell to 6-2, 1-1 CC.
Coverdale now has eight goals in the last five games and a pair of hat tricks in her last three contests.
Coverdale got the Diplomats on the board first in the 26th-minute of the opening half. Sarah Schannauer orchestrated the score, fired a shot just inside the right of the circle that Coverdale stopped underneath, before turning around and firing a shot in the lower right of the cage.
In the second half, Coverdale followed with her second score. Schannauer once again started the play, inserting a corner that Coverdale sent on cage. Her initial attempt was stopped by the Fords' goalkeeper but Coverdale stuck with the play and placing a high shot into the top of the goal for the 2-0 edge.
Coverdale capped off the hat trick in the 57th, firing a scorcher at the top of the circle that made its way through a slew of defenders and into the back of the cage.
Ilianna Santangelo preserved the shutout with a huge stop on a penalty stroke opportunity from Haverford in the 61st minute. She finished the game with five total saves to earn her third shutout of the season and improve to 6-1 on the year. Danielle Rette (6-2) was charged with the loss despite a nine-save effort.
Shots were controlled by the Diplomats at 19-8 in the game, including a 13-1 margin in the first half. Corners also favored F&M at 10-4. Coverdale placed all of her attempted shots on goal to lead the team with seven, while Nicole Bodo, Melissa Gula and Sydney Cole each tallied three.
A tough non-conference test awaits F&M on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to No. 1 Messiah for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
