HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall scored two goals in the final 5:31 of action to defeat Haverford 8-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 7-2, 2-0 CC while the Fords fell to 7-2, 1-1 CC.
Paige Moriarty ended with one goal and assist and became just the third player in program history to reach 200 career goals.
Haverford jumped out to a 1-0 lead, before the Diplomats answered with three straight. Grace Norley buried a feed from Paige Moriarty to start the run followed by two goals from Caroline Kolva. The Fords put one through late in the half to make it 3-2 at the break.
Thirty seconds into the second Haverford tied the game, but Norley struck again at 25:51 to put F&M back on top. Haverford tied the game again at 20:30 and Bridget O'Donnell put F&M back out front on F&M's next possession. The Fords took a 6-5 lead with a two-goal spurt, before Megan Jackson found Maddie Hughes at 12:20 to tie the game at 6-6.
Haverford again answered and went up 7-6, before F&M closed out the game with two unanswered. Jane Cote fed Moriarty for the first score at 5:31, before assisting Katie Groenke for the game-winner with 2:06 left to play.
Katharine Yenke had four ground balls and caused two turnovers and Anya Chopoorian came away with four draws and two ground balls. Danielle Harrington picked up the win with 10 stops and improved to 7-3.
The Diplomats held a slight 9-8 edge in draws and went 18-for-19 on clear attempts, while shots belonged to Haverford 27-21.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to Gettysburg for a 4:00 p.m. game.
