Diplomats Split With Garnet On Senior Day

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's softball team split with Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon. F&M took the first game 3-0 but dropped a hard-fought 10-inning 4-3 loss in the second game.

The Diplomats finished with a 14-12, 6-4 CC mark while the Garnet ended at 14-8, 4-4 CC. 

Prior to the game, F&M honored its five-member senior class of Sammy Burns, Crystal Good, Erin Russell, Izzy Schaefer, and Katie Wenger.

Game 1: F&M 3, SWAT 0 – (7 Innings)

F&M got on the board quickly with a run in the first inning. Sammy Burns notched a double to the left side to send Lexi Piccinich across the plate and take a 1-0 lead.

Swarthmore threatened in the third with the bases loaded and one out, but Sam Clemens recorded the fly out in centerfield and threw the Garnet runner out at home for the double play to keep Swarthmore off the board. 

The Diplomats tacked on two more runs in the fourth with an RBI-double from Ryan Correa. Christine Miles ended the inning sending Correa home with a single to give F&M a 3-0 lead.

Hits evened out at 6-6 a side. Correa and Burns led the offense with 2-for-3 performances.

Izzy Schaefer (10-5) recorded the win after throwing for seven innings with one strikeout while Swarthmore's Emily Bowman (3-3) took the loss after tossing for six innings.

Game 2: SWAT 4, F&M 3 – (10 Innings)

The Diplomats were the first to strike in the second game with Clemens opening the game with a single to the left side. Erin Russell delivered the sacrifice bunt to advance Clemens. Correa then notched a two-RBI triple to right field to bring home Clemens and Burns to give F&M a 2-0 lead.

Aggressive base running in the second inning helped Swarthmore to its first score of the day, scoring a runner on third with a groundout. 

Swarthmore evened the score in the third, scoring one run off one hit. 

The Garnet took the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI-single to right field to bring the score to 3-2. 

F&M responded in the sixth, tying the game at 3-3, with single up the middle from Correa to send Russell home.

Both teams battled back and forth in extra innings, but Swarthmore was able to record the first run in the 10th, scoring the placed runner on a fly out to left field. The Diplomats looked to force more innings with a runner on third and two outs in the bottom of the 10th, but the Garnet were able to force the out at first to end the game.

Russell led from the plate with a 3-for-3 performance and Correa tallied three RBIs.

Katie Wenger (3-6) recorded the loss after pitching for 10 innings and notching two strikeouts. Swarthmore's Mary Olesnavich (1-1) took the win after throwing for 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

The Diplomats are scheduled to travel to Susquehanna tomorrow for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
