Diplomats Drop Two to Bullets

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's softball team dropped both contests against Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday afternoon. The Diplomats lost the first game by a 5-0 tally before falling in a hard-fought 6-3 finish.

The losses dropped the Diplomats to 17-17, 8-6 CC while the Bullets improved to 17-13, 12-2 CC.

Game 1: Gettysburg 5, F&M 0 – (7 Innings)

Gettysburg took a quick lead in the first, garnering three runs off two hits, including a two-RBI home run. The Bullets tacked on another two-RBI homer in the second to extend their lead to 5-0.

The Diplomats threatened in the first inning as leadoff batter Sam Clemens gained scoring position after a sacrifice bunt from Erin Russell, but F&M was unable to convert.

Gettysburg threatened again in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but pitcher Sabrina Ryan forced a fly out to centerfielder Clemens to end the inning.   

Russell led the offense, going 1-for-2 from the plate, while Clemens, Sammy Burns and Christine Miles all tallied hits. 

Izzy Schaefer (13-4) was credited with the loss after throwing for 1 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs and recording one strikeout. Gettysburg's Aileen Reilly (7-8) earned the win, tossing for seven innings with six strikeouts. 

Game 2: Gettysburg 6, F&M 3 – (7 Innings) 

Gettysburg was the first to strike in the second game, garnering one run off two hits to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. 

Ryan Correa led off with a double to the left side in the second inning, and Katie Wenger followed with a home run to left field to give the Diplomats a 2-1 lead. 

F&M tacked on another run in the third with Clemens opening the inning with a triple to right field. Burns delivered the RBI single to send Clemens home and extend the lead to two. 

Gettysburg took back the lead in the fifth inning, coming away with three runs off four hits to gain the 4-3 edge. The Bullets notched on two more runs in the sixth off four hits to extend the deficit to three. 

F&M was able to get runners on first and second off hits from Lexi Piccinich and Burns but were unable to force extra innings. 

Burns went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Wenger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  

Wenger (3-7) took the loss after pitching for 4 2/3 innings while Gettysburg's McKenzie Somers (2-1) was credited with the win after throwing for two 1/3 innings and Reilly came away with the save after pitching for the last two innings.

The Diplomats are on the road for the doubleheader against Arcadia on Thursday, scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
