Diplomats Sweep Red Devils

CARLISLE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall delivered a 2-0 sweep in weekday Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Thursday afternoon. The Diplomats first defeated the Red Devils 1-0 in extra innings in the first game followed by a 2-0 victory.

F&M improved to 8-10, 3-3 CC while Dickinson dropped to 10-10, 1-3 CC. 

Game 1: F&M 1, Dickinson 0 – (8 Innings)

After a scoreless three innings, the Diplomats looked to get on the board in the fourth with a runner on third but were unable to convert.

Dickinson threatened in the fifth, getting a runner in scoring position, but F&M kept the Red Devils from crossing the plate.

Sammy Burns opened the bottom of the eighth with a double down left field line with Gabby Goodwin entering the game as a pinch-runner. Ryan Correa came up with the sacrifice bunt to advance Goodwin to third and Katie Wenger delivered the RBI single to left field to send Goodwin home and give F&M the win.

F&M outhit the Red Devils 8-5 with Izzy Schaefer going 2-for-2 and Wenger hitting 2-out-of-4.

Schaefer (5-5) garnered the win, pitching for eight innings and tallying seven strikeouts. Dickinson's Madison Milaszewski (4-2) took the loss after tossing for 7 1/3 innings. 

Game 2: F&M 2, Dickinson 0 – (7 Innings)

The Diplomats carried the momentum from the first game into the second, notching two runs in the first inning. Sam Clemens got the offense going with a single to centerfield. Erin Russell hit a sacrifice bunt up the third base line to advance Clemens. Lexi Piccinich followed with a single to left field, sending Clemens home and giving F&M the 1-0 lead. Correa singled an RBI after errors in the field sent Piccinich across the plate to extend the score to 2-0.

Dickinson tallied a triple in the top of the third, but a strong throw from Burns in the right field tagged the runner off at home to keep the Red Devils scoreless.

Hits evened out at 6-6 a side. Piccinich led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, recording one RBI.

Schaefer (6-5) earned her second win of the day, throwing two strikeouts over seven innings. Killian Kueny (5-3) took the loss on the other end, throwing for six innings and recording two strikeouts.

The Diplomats travel to Muhlenberg on Saturday, April 7 for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
