F&M Downs Haverford and Alvernia

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team delivered back-to-back victories on Saturday, first taking down Haverford 3-1 (25-9, 28-18, 24-26, 25-14) followed by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20).

The Diplomats improved to 9-4, 3-0 CC while the Fords dropped to 4-10, 0-2 CC and the Golden Wolves fell to 3-8.

Match 1 – F&M 3, Hav 1 (25-9, 28-18, 24-26, 25-14) 

F&M took an early lead after with Amy Mullen recording four service aces as part of an 8-0 run to give the Diplomats an 11-5 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Barbara Kapustin followed by a Casey Morrow kill extended the lead to 20-8 with two errors from Haverford finishing the first set 25-10 in F&M's favor. 

The Diplomats kept the momentum in the second set, with a 6-0 run that included two kills from Allison Franke to take a 12-4 lead.

The Fords came out strong, looking to force extra frames, taking a 12-7 lead in the third. F&M fought back with Grace Polisano behind the service line to go on a 3-0 run, while an error from Haverford tied the match at 19-19. Both teams continued to battle, but the Fords came away with the 26-24 win.

Haverford continued to put the pressure on with a 10-8 lead in the fourth set. Polisano and Carly Ostrowski remained constant behind the service line to help the Diplomats to a 9-1 run to take a 17-11 advantage. F&M kept its foot on the gas as the Fords became undone from errors with a Franke kill giving the Diplomats the match. 

Franke led the charge with 15 kills and 3 block assists, followed by Morrow (14) and Kapustin (11). Grace Maggiore notched a double-double of 40 assists and 18 digs. Mullen recorded a career-high five service aces.

Match 2 – F&M 3, Alvernia 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20)

The Diplomats carried the momentum into the second match of the day, taking a 12-8 lead after a Polisano kill in the first. Back-to-back kills from Morrow extended the deficit to seven, while an error from Alvernia gave F&M the first set 25-16.

F&M raced out in the second frame with Delaney Hahn behind the service line, going on a 6-0 run that included kills from Franke and Nicole Carey, to take a 9-1 lead. The Golden Wolves rallied back with a 6-0 run that was ended by a kill from Mullen, sparking F&M on a three-point run to take back the lead. A kill from Caroline Elgut started the Diplomats on a 5-2 run to take the second frame 25-21. 

F&M took an early lead in the third frame, but Alvernia tied the set up at 9-9. The Diplomats countered with a 3-0 run after a kill from Mullen to take a 14-10 advantage. The Golden Wolves stayed within three until the very end when F&M ended the set with a 5-1 run that included three kills from Franke to take the match.

Franke finished the match with 13 kills, followed by Morrow with 11. Maggiore tallied her second double-double of the day with 29 assists, 14 digs, and one solo block. 

F&M returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 26, resuming conference action against Swarthmore at 7:30 p.m.
