SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's No. 7 field hockey team took a 3-1 victory over Swarthmore in Saturday morning Centennial Conference (CC) competition.
The Diplomats improved to 9-1, 4-0 CC while the Garnet fell to 4-6, 1-3 CC.
It required less than three minutes for F&M to open up the scoring. Lily Mynott knocked in a close-range shot from the right side to get the Diplomats a quick 1-0 lead.
Darby Klopp took a Mynott feed from the left side for another fast-break score in the first quarter, expanding the F&M lead to 2-0 in the tenth minute of play.
Swarthmore got one goal back early in the second quarter, as Grace Twitchell cut the lead to 2-1 on an 18th-minute goal.
Despite a 3-0 Garnet advantage in penalty corner attempts in the third quarter, the Diplomats held Swarthmore in check to maintain a 2-1 lead entering the final frame.
F&M took advantage of a 55th-minute penalty corner when Melissa Gula added a much-appreciated insurance score off of an assist by Emma Durantine to give the Diplomats a 3-1 lead.
Christina Seery (9-1) registered six saves in the contest.
The Diplomats out-shot Swarthmore by a 21-11 margin, with a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday. The Diplomats will face Swarthmore at 7:00 p.m. at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pa.
