Diplomats Fall in Final Seconds to Greyhounds

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's last-second field goal sailed wide right as time expired securing a 17-16 victory for Moravian in Centennial Conference (CC) football action. The Diplomats fall to 4-4, 3-4 CC, while the Greyhounds improved to 3-5, 3-4 CC.

First Quarter (F&M 0 – MC 0)

Both teams struggled in their opening series, before F&M put together an 18-play, 76-yard drive midway through the quarter. F&M converted three third downs on the drive and were successful on a fourth-and-one at the Moravian 39 to keep the drive going. The Diplomats went down to the Moravian 5 yard line early in the second and Jack Rodenberger connected on a 22-yard field goal for the first points of the game.

Second Quarter (F&M 10 – MC 10)

The Greyhounds answered on the next series with a 49-yard drive and scored at 10:23 in the second to go-ahead 7-3. F&M came up empty on their next series and Moravian made the best of it with a 43-yard drive the ended with a 42-yard field goal, giving the Greyhound a 10-3 edge with 43 ticks on the clock.

On the first play of the next series, Garrett Perschy hocked up with Mack Focht for a 65-yard score and the point after made it 10-10 at the break. 

Third Quarter (F&M 16 – MC 10)

F&M kept the momentum going in the third with a touchdown on their opening drive. The Diplomats marched 65-yards down the field on seven plays and Keshon Farmer finished off the drive with an 11-yard spurt to put the Diplomats out front 16-10. The point after was blocked. 

Fourth Quarter (F&M 16 – MC 17)

Moravian went back on top with a touchdown to make it 17-16 with 3:54 left to play.  A 22-yard punt return by Brendan Deering gave F&M great field position on their final drive. A key third down picked up on third-and-five, kept the drive going and Perschy found Tim Walter for a 46-yard pitch-and-catch two plays later, putting the Diplomats on the Moravian 36. F&M went down to the Moravian and set up for a 26-yard field to win the game with three ticks on the clock, but Rodenberger's kick sailed wide right, giving Moravian the win.

Final Numbers

F&M outgained the Greyhounds 354-254 yards, and owed time of possession at 33:04-26:56.

Garrett Perschy completed 15-of-22 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown. Tim Walter was on the receiving of seven of those passes for 95 yards to lead the receiving group and Mack Focht ended with one 65-yard touchdown reception. Keshon Farmer racked up 80 yards on 20 carries with a score and Joe Hartley-Vittoria ended the day with 59 yards on 14 touches. 

Seb Silva-Muniz led the defensive effort with seven tackles (6 solo), including a sack and a forced fumble. Kevin Gault was in on six stops (2s). Marlen Fenstermacher ended with five (4s) tackles and a pass breakup, while K.J. Boston had a sack to finish with five stops (4s) 

Up Next

F&M is on the road next week at Ursinus for a 1:00 p.m. game, before returning to Shadek Stadium the following week for the regular-season finale against Gettysburg.
