CARLISLE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall came away with a 90-81 double-overtime victory over Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Tuesday evening. The Diplomats improved to 3-5, 1-3 CC, while the Red Devils fell to 1-6, 1-3 CC.
Dickinson had an early 6-3 lead four minutes into the game, before F&M outscored the Red Devils 12-9 over the next six minutes and took a 15-12 lead midway through the first. After a bucket by Dickson the Diplomats went on a 15-5 run for a 13-point, 30-17, lead with five minutes left in the first and took a 35-26 lead into the break.
F&M maintained at least a two-possession lead through the first nine minutes of the second, with the Red Devils coming within two, 46-44, at 11:22. The Diplomats answered with an 11-5 spurt to go ahead seven, 56-49, with 7:07 left in the second half. The Red Devils countered and outscored F&M 16-9 during the final seven minutes to tie the game at 65-65 and send it into overtime.
The teams traded buckets for most of the overtime with F&M leading by four, 73-69, but the Red Devils ended with a 6-2 spurt and tied the game at 75-75, setting up the second overtime.
The Diplomats dominated the final frame and led the entire five minutes to come away with the victory.
F&M outshot Dickinson 49%-47%, held a slight 38-37 edge on the glass and converted 26 turnovers into 23 points.
Solomon Mathis poured in 24 off the bench, hitting 9-for-12 from the floor. Brian Hines finished with a double-double pulling down 10 boards and scoring 22 points, while Ignas Slyka chipped in 13 and Mike Rice added 10 points for the Diplomats.
The Diplomats return to action on Dec. 29 when the F&M hosts St. Elizabeth at 3 p.m. in the second game of the Sponaugle New Year's Tournament.
