Marino Delivers in Overtime to Lift F&M Over York

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Ally Marino scored just 39 seconds into overtime to give No. 10 Franklin & Marshall an 11-10 victory over No. 5 York on Thursday evening. F&M improved to 1-1, while the Spartans suffered their first loss of the year and fell to 2-1.

Marino did all the damage in overtime, winning the draw before racing down the field to the center of the 8-meter. She then sprinted to the left side of the cage and fired from 4-meters out to the top right corner of the net for the game-winner.

F&M went on the board just 31 seconds into the game when Ally Marino buried a pass from Megan Jackson. York tied it three minutes later and F&M answered with three straight for a 4-1 edge midway through the first. Jackson started the run with two goals off feeds from Juliann Lisovicz and Marino, before Kolva struck at 14:25. York countered with back-to-back up-goals to come within one, but Maddie Hughes scored off an assist from Jane Cote to make it 5-3 heading into the break.

York came out strong in the second with two goals in the first five minutes to tie the game at 5-5 with 25:05 on the clock. Jackson stopped the run and gave F&M the lead back, 6-5, with a goal at 18:57. The Spartans netted two straight to take their first lead of the game, 7-6, but the Diplomats tied the game at 7-7 when Marino scored her second.

The Spartans went up 8-7, before Cote fed Jackson at 7:31 to tie the game at 8-8. York retook the lead two minutes later and Jackson and Cote connected again at 4:20 and tied the game at 9-9. Marino made it 10-9 off an assist from Maddie Hughes, but the Spartans tied it again at 10-10, with 44 ticks on the clock to send the game into overtime.

Megan Jackson paced the offense with a career-high five goals and one assist. Ally Marino followed with four scores while Jane Cote dished out three assists. Maddie Hughes had a score and an assist, Caroline Kolva struck once and Juliann Lisovicz had one helper.

Maggie Hanzsche caused five turnovers and Anya Chopoorian picked up three groundballs.

Julia McKay (1-1) earned the win, turning away eights shots while York's Abby Smith (2-1) took the loss after 13 saves.

F&M led in shots at 34-21 and ground balls 23-16, while the Spartans held 16-7 edge in draws.

The Diplomats head to No. 23 Messiah on Saturday, March 2 for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
