Diplomats Survive Fords

LANCASTER, Pa. – Maddie Hughes's free position goal with 6.4 seconds remaining helped lift Franklin & Marshall to an 18-17 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 7-3, 2-0 CC, while the Fords fell to 6-3, 1-1 CC.

Haverford took the early edge with a goal 45 seconds into the game, before F&M netted back-to-back scores for a 2-1 lead. The Fords tied it at 2-2, and F&M answered with a three-goal spurt for a 5-2 lead with 20:15 remaining in the first. A goal from the Fords made it 5-3 before the Diplomats closed out the half with an 8-4 run to make it 13-6 at the break.

A 4-1 run to start the second brought Haverford within four, 14-10, with 23:44 left in the game. The Diplomats had a 2-1 spurt to go ahead five, 16-11, but the Fords answered with five straight and tied the game at 16-16 with 10:18 left to play. Maddie Hughes stopped the run when she buried a pass from Jane Cote to put the Diplomats back on top, 17-16, at 9:18. Haverford answered and tied the game at 17-17 with 1:46 left and a turnover by Fords with 38 seconds on the clock led to Hughes' game-winner.

Megan Jackson led the offense with seven goals, Jane Cote had two scores with five assists, and Maddie Hughes ended with three scores and an assist. Ally Marino struck twice with one helper, Caroline Kolva had two goals, and three assists, while Clare Monaghan and Marissa McGarrey ended with a goal each. Grace Norley had an assist and McGarrey add one to her stat line as well.

Anya Chopoorian caused two turnovers, and Erin Phillips came away with five draws. Emily Kitchin improved to 1-0 with 10 saves in net.

The Diplomats had a slight 34-29 edge in shots, while the Fords edged F&M in draws at 19-18.

F&M returns to action on Wednesday when the Diplomats host No. 1 Gettysburg at 7:00 p.m.
