BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins defeated Franklin & Marshall 76-59 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening. The Blue Jays improved to 12-2, 6-1 CC, while the Diplomats dropped to 6-8, 2-5 CC.
Hopkins jumped out to an early 15-5 lead 4:23 into the game. The Diplomats came within 10 at 12:27 when Justin Kupa made it 20-10 on a jumper. The Blue Jays answered with a 17-6 run for a 21-point, 37-16 lead with 3:28 left in the first. The Diplomats answered with a 7-1 spurt to make it 38-23 at the break.
F&M continued its run in the second by outscoring Hopkins 16-6 during the first seven minutes to come within five and a Solomon Mathis triple made it 44-39. The Blue Jays quickly went back up in double figures and held a 56-44 edge with 8:35 on the clock. F&M went on a 10-2 run and a Les Thomas three at 5:58 brought F&M within four, 58-54. The Blue Jays countered with 10 straight and outscored F&M 18-5 to secure the win.
Justin Kupa netted 17 points, hitting 4-for-11 from the floor, and going 8-for-8 from the line. Les Thomas had 10 and Brian Hines netted nine. Matt Redhead chipped in nine off the bench, and Solomon Mathis ended with eight.
F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats host Muhlenberg at 2:00 p.m.
