LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 10 Johns Hopkins defeated Franklin & Marshall 64-53 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening. The Diplomats fell to 10-14, 6-11 CC, while the Blue Jays improved to 21-3, 15-2 CC.
Johns Hopkins held an early 8-4 lead six minutes into the game, before Matt Redhead netted four points in 7-0 spurt by F&M to bring the Diplomats within three, 11-8, at 12:11. The Blue Jays answered with a 9-0 run to go ahead 20-8 and after a bucket by F&M, Hopkins netted six more and for a 28-11 lead.
The Diplomats came within 11 on three occasions in the final four minutes of action, but Hopkins scored the last five points of the half and went in the break with a 37-21 lead.
F&M opened the second with a 10-4 run to come within 10, 41-31, before the Blue Jays took a 15-point lead, 48-33, at 12:46. Justin Kupa netted seven points to lead F&M on an 11-2 run that brought F&M within six, 50-44, at 8:52.
Hopkins countered with five straight and led 55-44 at 6:46. Three points from Ignas Slyka brought F&M within eight, 55-47, with a little more than five minutes left to play. The Blue Jays answered by outscoring F&M 9-1 over the next three minutes to pull away and secured the win.
Brian Hines led the Diplomats with 12 points and five rebounds while Solomon Mathis ended with 10 points. Ignas Slyka recorded 10 points and reset the school record for most steals in a game with 10.
F&M closes out the regular season on Saturday when the Diplomats host Ursinus at 3:00 p.m.
