YORK, Pa. – Megan Jackson buried a pass from Maddy Birch with 49 seconds left in the second overtime to give No. 7 Franklin & Marshall a 10-9 victory over No. 6 York in women's lacrosse action Wednesday evening. The Diplomats improved to 2-0, while the Spartans fell to 1-1.
Clare Monaghan gave F&M an early 1-0 lead with a goal 22 seconds into the game. York tied it three minutes later before the Diplomats answered with six straight and took a 7-1 lead at 14:26. The Spartans countered with two unanswered to make it 7-3 at the break.
York opened the second with three straight to come within a goal, 7-6, but Marissa McGarrey's free position goal put the Diplomats back up two at 16:58. The Spartans struck at 13:11 to again come within a goal, 8-7, but McGarrey answered with another free-position goal to make it 9-7 with 11:07 left to play. York ended the game with two straight goals to send the game into overtime.
Both teams had good scoring opportunities in the first overtime but were not able to connect. The teams exchanged shots to start the second overtime, but came away empty. York fired away a shot with 1:18 left that went wide and Maggie Hanzsche came away with the ground ball that set up the game-winner.
Marissa McGarrey ended with four goals, Megan Jackson had two and Maddy Birch, Maisie O'Shea, Clare Monaghan, and Ally Marino all struck once for the Diplomats.
Maggie Hanzsche had five ground balls with three caused turnovers and Anya Chopoorian along with Emma Arronson and Mary Pat McKenna caused two turnovers each.
Emily Kitchen improved to 2-0 after she turned away 11 shots.
The Diplomats led in shots 36-30, and ground balls 17-13 with draws being even at 12-12.
F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to No. 12 Mary Washington for a 12:00 p.m. game.
