Fredericksburg, Va -- No. 6 Franklin & Marshall used two separate stretches of four unanswered goals in both halves to pull clear of No. 14 Mary Washington in an 11-9 road victory.
The Diplomats improved to 3-0 with the victory, while the Eagles fell to 2-2.
The two sides traded goals to open the game, with F&M scoring first on a Nancy Taylor rip under two minutes into the half. The teams exchanged goals over the next six minutes, ending deadlocked at 2-2.
F&M caught fire soon after, using a 4-0 spurt to pull ahead 6-2 with 7:51 remaining. Mary Washington scored the final two goals of the first half to narrow F&M's lead to 6-4 at the half.
The Diplomats opened the second half with another stretch of four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 10-4 with 17:26 remaining. The Eagles made things interesting towards the latter portion of the half, netting five of the next six to slice F&M's lead to 11-9.
F&M held on for the last minute and change to pick up their third straight victory over a ranked opponent to open the season.
Megan Jackson and Ally Marino each ended with three goals, while Maddy Birch and Nancy Taylor finished with two apiece. Clare Monaghan tallied the other Diplomat goal.
Emily Kitchin picked up the win, making seven saves for the Diplomats and improved to 3-0.
Mary Washington was paced by Morgan Shorts, who had four goals.
F&M led 30-19 in shots and 16-9 in caused turnovers.
The Diplomats return home on Wednesday afternoon to face Messiah for a 4 p.m. matchup at Shadek Stadium.
