Women's Soccer Clinches Playoff Bid With Draw Against Gettysburg

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. -- A 79th minute Meg O'Callahan PK goal helped Franklin & Marshall salvage a 1-1 stalemate with Gettysburg on Wednesday evening at Tylus Field. The draw was enough to send the Diplomats (11-2-2, 5-2-2 CC) to its first Centennial Conference (CC) postseason since the 2011 season. The draw moved the Bullets to 10-3-2, 4-3-2 CC - a full game behind F&M

Gettysburg came out quickly out of the gates, putting early pressure on the Diplomats. The Bullets ran up five shots, including one towards the frame and two corner kicks throughout the first 13 minutes. Sierra Brophy responded, however, with two shots of her own, including one towards the net at the 17:05 minute mark. F&M held court for most of the final half hour of the stanza, but could not convert.

Gettysburg pounced first on goal at the 71:17 minute mark off a corner kick that found Bullets feet in the box. The ensuing shot was shielded well by a sea of players, and found twine for a 1-0 advantage.

It didn't take long for the Diplomats to answer. F&M bounced back in the 79th minute, taking advantage of a scrum in the box that led to a Gettysburg red card. Meg O'Callahan stepped to the spot and converted to knot the game up at 1-1. It was O'Callahan's eighth goal of the season.

The Bullets had a few last gasp attempts, but Emily Senko was game over the final ten minutes to snuff out three shots on frame - including a spectacular diving effort.

F&M largely held the time of possession battle with the player advantage in overtime, outshooting Gettysburg 7-2. Only one of those seven shots found its target - a Sierra Brophy shot in the first period of extra time - as the Diplomats settled for the 1-1 draw.

F&M outshot Gettysburg 25-20, but trailed in corner kicks 6-3. A mild first half led to the teams combining for 23 shots (13 for F&M, 10 for Gettysburg) in the second half.

Sierra Brophy and Haley Barge each had five shots for the Diplomats, who only had six shots on target all evening.

Emily Senko recorded seven saves for F&M and is now 3-2-1 on the season.

F&M's final regular season game will take place at Tylus Field on Saturday afternoon against No. 2 Johns Hopkins. Kickoff is at noon.
